There are plenty of times in this blog that I am going to give long winded explanations of topics to help you to have a long and successful career in a public accounting firm’s tax department. But it is important to keep in mind that preparing tax returns is only a job.
As John Lennon once said,
If you don’t like how its going at your current firm then you have three options:
- Stay miserable.
- Figure out what needs to change at your current firm to make you happy and make it happen (or get help to make it happen).
- Start the process of moving to another firm.

Hi Bill,
I love your blog! I’ve been working at a CPA firm for about 5 years now and I think the key to making it through busy season is to try and plan something fun to look forward to after the big deadline – plan a vacation or day trip, or use all the $$$ you have been saving (whilst you had no life!) to go out and buy yourself something nice. Just my 2 cents!
Thanks,
Lucinda

Thanks for your tips! I have had my own CPA firm doing tax work for 33 yrs & have been in the profession for 40 yrs. I love it!!! I have 5 employees. I have had to figure out ways to get data in early during tax season and bill 1 1/2 times the amount if it comes in within 2 weeks of the deadline. We can’t do everyone’s returns if they all come in during the last 2 weeks!!!! Get rid of clients that give you grief and ones you think about in the middle of the night. Life is too short and wonderful.
